Police warn shopkeepers of 'ringing the changes' scam

Police are issuing a warning to shopkeepers and cashiers following reports of a so-called ‘ringing the changes’ scam operating across Devon and Cornwall.

Suspects have entered post offices, building societies, shops and even restaurants wanting to exchange notes to different denominations.

They then attempt to confuse till staff and while the staff are distracted, use sleight of hand in an attempt to steal cash.

Incidents have been reported in a Helston supermarket, a Lynmouth shop and a Plymouth restaurant.

Police have released descriptions of two female suspects:

Suspect one is described as being of Romanian or Asian appearance in her twenties about 5'3'' tall, of medium to large build with black hair, possibly with some blonde highlights to the top of her head. She has a round shaped face.

Suspect two is described as being a female of Hispanic origin is approximately 5ft 7ins tall and is known to carry a large black leather bag.

A police spokesman said: “One recent attempt was foiled because the staff member was trained to spot the scam.

"If you or your staff encounter anyone attempting this ruse or similar, please contact the police on the 999 number if the offender is still nearby, or the Devon and Cornwall Police 101 number, quoting Log 945 07/08/2013 if you can provide any information. Please make all of your staff aware and remain vigilant.”
