Red Cross in Plymouth invites you to join their Refugee Week celebration open day
The British Red Cross in Plymouth will be celebrating World Refugee Day on Wednesday 20 June with an open day at their offices in Catherine Street and they invite the people of Plymouth to join them.
Members of the community are invited to attend the celebrations from 11am. There will be fun activities throughout the day including a quiz, guest speakers and live music. A selection of world foods will be served at noon, prepared by member of the Red Cross refugee services women’s group.
The Red Cross has a long-running refugee services team who see every newly dispersed asylum seeker arriving in Plymouth through its ‘Welcome Project’. All asylum seekers are visited by one of our volunteers within hours of their arrival in the city, welcoming them and helping orientate them to their new home.
David Feindouno, refugee service manager at the Red Cross said: “This Refugee Week we want to celebrate the enormous contribution that refugees make to our community. From students to GPs to restaurateurs, they have so much to offer Plymouth. Refugees show incredible resilience and optimism, despite many having been through more than most of us can imagine.
“At our open day we want to welcome local people to visit our offices and learn more about the work of the Red Cross here in Plymouth. They can meet some of our volunteers and the people we support and enjoy some coffee, cake and wonderful food. Everyone is welcome.”
As well as supporting refugees and asylum seekers, the Red Cross in Plymouth helps hundreds of people every year following a stay in hospital. It loans wheelchairs and other mobility aid to people following an injury or illness, and the Connecting Communities service provides support to people feeling lonely or socially isolated.
Information about all the services offered by the Red Cross will be available at the open day for people to learn more about the work of the charity in Devon.
Refugee Week takes place every year across the world in the week around World Refugee Day.
