Refurbished Naval Heritage Centre open to visitors

As part of Plymouth’s History Festival (1-31 May), visitors are invited to tour the newly refurbished Naval Heritage Centre at Devonport Dockyard.

The main events are on Monday 6 May and Sunday 19 May, 10am -5pm. They are a valuable opportunity to walk around and enjoy the entire Heritage Collection with an added chance to take a tour of HMS Courageous – the only decommissioned Hunter-Killer submarine on display this side of the Atlantic.

The Devonport Naval Heritage Site and Visitor Centre celebrates the development of The Dockyard and Plymouth’s pivotal role in supporting the Royal Navy through major conflicts since 1300, including two World Wars. Through its collections, interactive experiences and pictorial interpretation, the drama of the close relationship of Devonport, the Royal Navy, The Dockyard and the people of Plymouth can be explored.

There will be a wide range of displays and activities together with a programme of short talks/slide shows including a presentation on the work of the SHIPs project – the Maritime History of the Plymouth Sound from prehistoric times to present day. Free entry and nearby parking with refreshments available are onsite.  Programmes will be available on the gate and donations to help maintain the exhibitions are welcomed.

The Devonport Naval Heritage Site & Visitor Centre is open, by appointment, to groups of visitors. It is ideal for Departmental, Divisional or Team-Building events as well as for public and family enjoyment. There will also be an opportunity to tour the Centre on Armed Forces Day on Saturday 29 May.
