Simon Jupp MP calls for extra funding to repair Devon’s roads

Simon Jupp, MP for East Devon, met with the Chancellor, Jeremy Hunt MP, in Parliament on 31st January to ask for further funding to resurface and repair Devon’s roads.

Highlighting the concerns raised with him by residents across East Devon, Simon Jupp MP outlined the challenges facing Devon’s roads which are coming to the end of their service life, especially in more rural areas.

The East Devon MP has made improving the county’s transport network a key priority and has helped deliver major investments into Devon, including the Dinan Way extension in Exmouth, a new railway station for Cullompton and a £13 million boost for Devon County Council to repair local roads.

The £13 million of additional funding, spread across the county council’s budget this financial year and next year, has allowed Devon County Council to bring forward more than 65 road repair schemes including in Exmouth, Seaton, and Axminster.

During his meeting with the Chancellor, the East Devon MP thanked the government for providing extra highways funding following his campaigning and urged them to build upon this by providing further financial support in the upcoming Spring Budget for resurfacing and repairs.

Simon Jupp, MP for East Devon, said; “I’m out and about speaking to people from across our part of Devon every week, and a common grumble is the state of our roads. I have campaigned hard for additional government investment into Devon, including during my time working at the Department for Transport, and helped secure the £13 million added to the county council’s highways budget. During my meeting with the Chancellor, I called for the government to provide further funding to help resurface and repair our roads. We all want smoother, safer journeys in Devon, and I’ll continue to campaign for the investment we need to make that happen.”
