Christians and Churches across the South West are being invited to pray for the people of Ukraine during a special event this coming Sunday.

South West Prays, this Sunday (20th) from 6-7pm, will see thousands of people participate by gathering in local church buildings, across Devon, Cornwall, Devon, Somerset and Dorset, as well log online to watch the event LIVE as it is broadcast on YouTube.

The event is being supported by Church of England Bishops across the region, including the Bishop of Truro, Rt Revd Philip Mounstephen, and church leaders from across the denominations.

This hour-long broadcast, will include worship, prayers led by local church leaders, as well as times of reflection. There will also be special video features and prayers from people who are witnessing the war firsthand.

Christians from all styles and denominations across the region are being invited to join this historical prayer gathering, which will see individuals standing alongside each other to seek God for peace, safety and provision, wisdom, and an end to the conflict.

The event is being organised by churches and Christian organisations from across the region, who each have a heart for prayer, and enjoy working collaboratively on events and projects to inform and equip the Christians who live here.

This is not the first time they have hosted a South West Prays event; over the pandemic thousands of people tuned into a special livestream in which over 30 church leaders prayed for the country and the effects of Covid-19.

This time around, local churches across the region are being invited to open up their doors and broadcast South West Prays on their big screens. As they do so, Christians from across the region are being invited to visit a local Church Hub near to them to participate, or watch LIVE Online from their homes.

Mark Pugh, Lead Pastor of Rediscover Church, is from one of the churches participating and said: "Churches have been mobilised in so many ways over recent weeks, providing care, support and practical responses to the vast needs emerging as a result of the war in Ukraine, but we are also standing together in prayer.

"We are praying that all death and destruction would end, that the vulnerable will know safety and shelter and that lasting peace will be established in eastern Europe. As Mother Theresa once said ‘God shapes the world by prayer.

"The more praying there is in the world the better the world will be, the mightier the forces against evil.’ We invite anyone who wants to join with is to attend one of the local church hubs or join online from their homes."

People can find out which local churches are participating as Hub Locations, as well as the link to access the livestream, at www.southwestprays.com
