South West nurse joins popular hospital as Ward Manager

A nurse who has dedicated her career to caring for patients in Devon and Cornwall, has joined popular hospital Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre as Ward Manager.

Marie Aitkenhead gained her Diploma in Adults in Acute Care Areas Adult Nursing at the University of Plymouth in 2007. She gained other qualifications at the University, culminating in a BSc in Health Studies in 2015.

Her first ward management role was as Deputy Ward Manager on Wolf Ward at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHP). She was then Deputy Ward Manager on Pendennis Ward at the Royal Cornwall Hospitals NHS Trust before returning to UHP in the role of Deputy Ward Manager on Stannon/Norfolk Ward. Marie joins Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre from this post.

Marie also has experience of teaching and mentoring fellow nurses. She has taken this role with student nurses, international and preceptee nurses, both in one-to-one and group settings.

Speaking of her new role, Marie said: “I am delighted to be joining Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre, which not only enjoys an outstanding reputation for the highest quality of patient care but also as a wonderful place in which to work. I am looking forward to working with my team on the ward and with other colleagues across the hospital.”

I am confident she will bring her skills and expertise to bear on this role and will help us to maintain and build upon our outstanding reputation for patient care. I am also pleased that she is joining us in this, the International Year of the Nurse and Midwife.”

Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre offers a range of care options including orthopaedic, cataract and general surgery and endoscopic investigations. If your GP agrees that you need treatment you can ask them to refer you to the hospital for treatment – it is part of your choice as an NHS patient and self-pay options are available.

It is the first hospital of its kind to have been awarded an overall ‘Outstanding’ rating by the Care Quality Commission.
