A new survey carried out by Devon Environmental Business Initiative (DEBI) has revealed current attitudes in Devon towards running greener businesses.

The survey, which polled SMEs across the county, asked a series of questions to ascertain interest in environmental best practice.

52 per cent of respondents believe Devon to be proactive in terms of environmental best practice, with a significant 76 per cent agreeing that they would like to improve their performance.

When asked about the benefits of joining a not for profit organisation like DEBI to help them improve environmental best practice, 68 per cent of businesses responded in the affirmative, with others stating it would depend on the cost involved.

72 per cent were keen to receive regular communications about environmental best practice and information on what other businesses are already doing to achieve this.

Interest in environmental business awards was high, with just under 71 per cent saying they would consider entering their business.

DEBI Director, Victoria Davison said: “This was an extremely affirmative survey, showing that businesses across Devon remain intent on finding ways of pursuing more environmentally friendly practices, despite the squeeze on resources from the still-challenging financial climate.

“With annual membership of DEBI costing from just £25, we hope that many more businesses will join us this year. Any business is welcome to enter our environmental awards, which will launch in June. Entering the awards is straightforward and results are based on visits to shortlisted entrants – so winning an award is a valued accolade.”

Members of DEBI receive discounted or free attendance at DEBI events, opportunities to network and share environmental best practice with other businesses and twice-monthly email updates.
