These Popular Devon Beaches have Been Named Some of the UK’s Best-Value for a Seafront Sun Lounger 

New research from Monzo reveals where £2.50 still gets holidaymakers a spot by the sea, while a sun lounger on Bournemouth Beach could cost nearly four times more.

A day at the beach is one of life’s simple pleasures, but with the cost of living still squeezing budgets, a relaxing day on the sand can come with a surprising price tag. New research from Monzo uncovers the priciest and most affordable sun loungers on Britain’s beaches to help customers make their money go further this summer. 

The research looks at the cost of renting a single sun lounger for a day at 20 of the UK’s most popular beaches. 

The best value sun loungers in the UK: 

For Brits on the hunt for a bargain, Saltburn Beach in North Yorkshire offers one of the cheapest seaside sun loungers in the UK, costing just £2.50 for the day. That’s less than a portion of chips in most places, making it the perfect spot for a budget-friendly trip.

The second-best value sun loungers were located on five out of the 20 British beaches included in the research, costing £3.00 for the day. This included the bustling East Coast at Great Yarmouth and the picturesque harbours of St Ives, along with the charming bays at Beer, Broadsands, and Whitby.

Steephill Cove Beach on the Isle of Wight was third on the list, where a sun lounger costs £3.50 per day. The remaining cheapest sun loungers were dotted across the UK, with many clustered along the South and South-West coasts, several popular spots in Wales, and others stretching from Yorkshire to Lincolnshire and up to the North-West.

The priciest spots by the sea in the UK:

Bournemouth Beach, on the south coast of England, famous for its 1.7 miles of golden sand, has the most expensive sun loungers in the UK at £10.50 a day. Although this does get you a full sun lounger, not just a deckchair, adding a touch of luxury to a day by the sea.

The second priciest spot by the sea is Worthing Beach in West Sussex, where renting a sun lounger costs £10.00 per day. While it’s on the expensive side for the UK, visitors can enjoy the beautiful palm-tree-lined promenade - no passport required.

Sun loungers in Europe

For those heading overseas this summer, the research also looked at sun lounger prices at top beach destinations across Europe in collaboration with Skyscanner. 

While the UK is the cheapest on average, there are European beaches offering even better deals. On Playa de Maspalomas in Spain, a sun lounger costs just £2.15 a day, notably cheaper—by about 14%—than on Saltburn Beach in North Yorkshire. Meanwhile, Croatia has some of the most expensive sun loungers in Europe, with an average cost of around £18.50 - nearly four times higher than the UK average.
