Tree-mendous collection returning
Plymouth City Council is putting on a special collection to pick up all the real Christmas trees once the festive period is over.
The Council will be running its tree collection scheme from the weeks beginning Monday 11 January and 18 January will run until Thursday 21 January.
All people have to do is to put the trees out next to their bins or bags and a crew will pick it up on the day their rubbish and recycling is collected.
Councillor Brian Vincent, Cabinet Member for Streetscene said: “The scheme was very popular last year and helped cut the number of abandoned trees dumped in back lanes and around properties for weeks on end.”
The tree rounds will operate separately but will be timed to make sure it is on the same day as people’s bins are out. In total, three crews will be out and about in trucks picking up the trees and a further two with a shredder.
Councillor Vincent added: “Last year we got calls from people who thought their trees were missed by the recycling crew. It will be a separate round, but leave your tree out on the day your recycling is due to be collected and it will be picked up."
Last year over 13 tonnes of fir and pine trees were picked up and taken to Chelson Meadow to be chipped.
Anyone who misses their round will have to take their tree to Chelson Meadow and Weston Mill Recycling Centres to be chipped’
Residents are also being reminded about rubbish and recycling arrangements over the festive period. It is business as usual for crews in the week leading up to Christmas, with normal rounds on Monday 21, Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 December.
During the week between Christmas and the New Year, collections will be a day later than usual except those who get their bin and bags picked up on Thursday, which will be two days later.
- Monday 28 December will be picked up on Tuesday 29 December
- Tuesday 29 December will be picked up on Wednesday 30 December
- Wednesday 30 December will be picked up on Thursday 31 December
- Thursday 31 December will be picked up on Saturday 2 January
The arrangements are subject to weather conditions. If collections are suspended for any reason they will continue the next working day (including Saturdays) until normal schedules are resumed.
