Lively music by 'Wally's Dance Party' was enjoyed in the beautiful setting of Plymouth Guildhall by those who attended an evening of ballroom and sequence dancing on Thursday 2nd February.

The event was organised by mesothelioma patient Wally Wright, in association with the Lord Mayor of Plymouth Councillor Pauline Murphy and her consort Councillor Brian Vincent, both who attended the event.

Despite numbers being lower than hoped for, due to bad weather, the evening which included a raffle raised an amazing £770 for the South West Mesothelioma Support Group, whilst at the same time raising awareness of asbestos related cancer which is rife in Plymouth and the South West.

Wally said; ‘My sincere gratitude goes to Pauline for her support and assistance in organising the event. Also, to those who helped on the door and with the raffle. Needless to say, the biggest thanks go to all those who attended. As a mesothelioma sufferer, a lot of effort went into planning the dance, however, I am very pleased that such a fantastic amount has been raised for a very worthwhile cause.’

The South West Mesothelioma Support group holds regular meetings in Plymouth and Truro for those diagnosed or affected by Mesothelioma plus other asbestos related conditions.

The group’s friendly and informal meetings are a chance to meet other patients and carers who understand what those diagnosed are going through and also share more about the condition and the help that is available. Members of the group also fund raise and spread awareness throughout the region about the condition and ongoing dangers of asbestos.

New members are welcome. Anyone requiring information about the support group can contact Mesothelioma Clinical Nurse Specialist Christine Jones on 01752 763665 or christine.paterson4@nhs.net
