A 19-year-old volunteer at Efford Library has been awarded 20 books to give away as part of this year’s World Book Night celebrations.

Abbie Cunningham has been working as a volunteer with Plymouth City Council’s HeadSpace group for five years.

She will be giving away 20 free copies of ‘The Secret Scripture’ by Sebastian Barry to young people, staff and volunteers at the group and encouraging them to read and discuss it.

Abbie said: “I’m really excited to help promote an age old tradition such as reading in a society where more and more young people are more interested in spending a night playing games then curling up with a good book. I know many young people who love reading, but only do so in secret and it’s time to bring reading to every teenager’s attention, showing them that it’s not ‘uncool’ to read.”

HeadSpace provides a place for young people in Efford to read, surf the internet, listen to music, take part in events and chill out. Two age groups meet at the library every Tuesday – 11 to 12 year olds meet from 4pm to 5.30pm and 13 to 19 year olds meet from 6pm to 7.30pm.

If you are aged between 16 and 25 and would like more information on volunteering with HeadSpace call Efford Library on 308985 or email efford.library@plymouth.gov.uk.
