Laura Robson through to Wimbledon fourth round after gutsy fightback
Laura Robson has become the first British woman to reach the second week of Wimbledon since Sam Smith in 1998 after beating Marina Erakovic in three sets yesterday (Saturday 30 June).
Robson fought back impressively after being outplayed in the first set by her rival. The New Zealander won the first set 1-6 before Robson, three points from defeat, turned the match around, clinching the second and third sets 7-5 6-3.
The teenager will play Estonia's Kaia Kanepi, a former quarter-finalist, on Monday.
Robson joins Serena Williams in the last 16. The favourite powered past the 42-year-old Kimiko Date-Krumm of Japan winning in straight sets 6-2 6-0. A sixth Wimbledon title beckons for the American who will meet the German number 23 seed Sabine Lisicki next.
The Serb and men's number one seed Novak Djokovic was similarly dominant against his French opponent Jérémy Chardy, winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-2. Djokovic will meet the veteran German Tommy Haas in the fourth round.
