Plymouth Argyle begin new campaign

Plymouth Argyle start their new campaign against newly promoted Cambridge United on Saturday.

Their first match of the season will be played at the R Costings Abbey Stadium, which is the home of Cambridge United.

Cambridge have had a successful pre-season, winning seven of their ten games, including an 8-0 thrashing over St Neots Town, whereas Plymouth have struggled for any kind of consistency. They have just won one of their five games; however they have played harder opposition, including Premier League team Swansea, who they lost 4-0 to.

The last time these two met was back in the nineties. The game finished 2-2 at Plymouth on 1st May 1999, in Division 3.

Last season, Plymouth finished a respectable 10th in League Two, having amassed 60 points from their 46 games. Cambridge finished 2nd in the Conference Premier on 82 points and thus had to battle it through the playoffs to reach the football league. They beat FC Halifax Town in the semi-finals 2-1 on aggregate. They met Gateshead in the final, and in front of just under 20,000 people at Wembley in May, beat them 2-1 to gain promotion.

Both sides have been busy thus far in the transfer market. Plymouth have brought in 11 new faces, and have sold or released 12. Cambridge have signed 7 new players, and sold one player and loaned another one out.

Cambridge will be brimming with confidence after being promoted last season and after having a successful pre-season. Plymouth will know what they need to do to win due to a lot of experience in these kinds of situations. However, due to the confidence factor with Cambridge, I predict the home side will edge past Plymouth, winning 2-1.
