Top golf courses continue to appeal to Devonians
Although attending a local theatre production and watching Exeter City in action are great things, sometimes you can’t beat getting out on the golf course. The county is filled with excellent golf courses for the local people of Devon.
Given the county’s lushness, golfers from around the country venture to Devon. For the local population, though, these fantastic courses are right on their doorstep. Sure, the passionate golfers of Devon watch the major competitions and have a flutter after looking at the latest US Masters odds, but getting out on the golf course is also tempting, particularly in the summer months. All over Devon, golfers are doing precisely that, with the county’s natural landscapes creating a stunning sporting package.
After all, golf is a sport for which people are exposed to wild landscapes, rolling hills, and untouched coastlines, which Devon is famous for. As such, it’s one of the best counties in the nation for diehard golfers. With that in mind, below is a brief look at some of Devon’s lucky golfers who can easily play at some top golf courses.
Bovey Castle Golf Club
Located in Dartmoor, Bovey Castle Golf Club is a relatively new course compared to many other options. Bovey Castle can be seen in the distance as you find your range and sinking putts. Likewise, with players immersing themselves in the British countryside, it’s an escape. This course stretches over 6,600 yards, contains a few tricky holes, and is a fantastic option for most players in the area.
Ilfracombe Golf Club
Ilfracombe Golf Club is renowned for its pristine condition and excellent clifftop location. It is another golf course that continues to lure Devon’s population of golfers in. Despite being a relatively short course, this windy setting serves up a test many golfers want to experience to improve various aspects of their games. In the summer, you can expect a feast for the eyes, but make sure you have your phone’s camera ready.
Exeter Golf & Country Club
Perhaps before attending an Exeter City fixture in the afternoon, many people enjoy a morning’s worth of golfing at Exeter Golf & Country Club. The immediately noticeable Georgian mansion isn’t the only attractive feature here either, with the course itself offering some truly spectacular views of the nearby Haldon Hill. This particular course is also suitable for golfers of all standards, although it can be challenging if the conditions aren’t perfect. Overall, Exeter Golf & Country Club is a superb course to consider playing at. You can also get some practice at the club’s driving range or by putting green.
Saunton Golf Club
Many Devonians regard Saunton Golf Club's East course as the best and unique course in the county. Designed by Herbert Fowler in the 1920s, golfers can sample playing in a picturesque setting on the wonderful North Devon coastline. While it’s a course for the more experienced golfer, it’s a challenge many players relish taking on. Even if their golf game isn’t delivering results, the lush surroundings make up for it.
Woodbury Park Golf Club
A private golf club with a strong reputation, Woodbury Park Golf Club is another top course Devonians should be proud of. Found in the heart of the Devonshire countryside, it has two courses to tackle in a gorgeous parkland setting, plus a 9-hole course for all abilities. The food and drink on offer after the game are also delicious.
