College Students Grill Restaurant Bosses

Students from Cornwall College Saltash visited one of Plymouth’s leading steakhouse restaurants to see for themselves what it takes to run a successful business.

The level three professional chef students were given the inside track at the Marco Pierre White Steakhouse Bar & Grill at The Crowne Plaza Hotel in Plymouth where they quizzed bosses on the day-to-day running of the top floor eaterie.

They were also given a number of chef demonstrations on food prep and taught about working with a well-known brand, health and safety in the kitchen as well as healthy eating.

The visit came about when their tutor David Galpin, spotted the steakhouse team at Flavour Fest 2019 where they were serving a range of tasty burgers offered in the restaurant and asked if it would be possible for the college to pop in and take a look around.

And following the visit, four of the students will now undertake some work experience in May, where they will gain some real hands-on experience preparing and serving our customers.

Richard Newbery, Human Resources manager at the hotel and restaurant, who organised the day said: “We’re always pleased to show local students what’s involved with a business like ours. There’s always so much more than meets the eye and they really get an idea on how much work is involved.

“Days like these prove inspirational to those who come along and we’re also delighted that four of them will be returning later in the year. We’re conscious that the students of today are tomorrow’s chefs or restaurant managers so it’s important they get a good understanding of how it all works.

“Who knows, we might even discover the next Marco Pierre White!”

The popular venue is always happy to host visits by local schools and colleges and these always seem very popular with students, who are not only keen to learn more but leads to some enquiring about possible work!

Richard added: “At the end of the day quite a few of the pupils were asking about working here and some of those who visited from could well end up being employed here.”
