Double gold celebration for Students' Union
Plymouth University’s Students’ Union (UPSU) has won gold in the Green Impact Students’ Union scheme for the second year running, celebrating its sustainable and environmentally friendly ethos.
The national initiative, led by the National Union of Students, recognises unions who work to limit their impact on the environment and operate in a sustainable way.
Judges undertook a thorough analysis of the measures UPSU has in place to make its operations more environmentally friendly and awarded it gold status for its good practice. Many of the criteria required a partnership approach with the university.
President of UPSU Jazz Singh-Khaira said: “I’m delighted that we have been awarded gold in the Green Impact scheme. We take our responsibility to operate in a sustainable and environmentally friendly way very seriously so this award is recognition for all the work officers, staff and students have achieved.”
And to add to their collection, UPSU has also become one of seven nationwide to scoop a top award for its policy and practice in selling alcohol responsibly, winning a gold award in the Best Bar None national scheme.
The Union’s operating policies and procedures were rigorously assessed against criteria such as public and event safety, prevention of crime and disorder, staff training, consideration for the local community and the responsible retailing of alcohol, both via written records and an unannounced visit.
Greg White, Chief Executive of UPSU, said: “Our success in the Best Bar None awards is testament to delivering excellence to our members and recognises the incredible work of our staff who work tirelessly to ensure our customers experience the highest standards of customer service, safety and care whilst enjoying their social time at UPSU.”
Both awards were collected at the National Union of Students annual Services Convention and AGM in Manchester last month.
Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor David Coslett said: “The University strongly believes in a culture of partnership with students, and these two gold awards are testament to the Union’s proactive attitude and initiative in helping to strengthen this. We are very proud of their achievements and our congratulations go to all involved.”
