Open Day for Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry
Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry is to hold an open day on Saturday 1st June for those keen to study medicine or dentistry at the University.
The open day, which starts at 9.00am and finishes at 4.30pm, is the second to be held this year: the first attracted over 420 prospective students and guests for medicine and over 220 for dentistry.
For medicine the day includes an overview of the course; an introduction to problem based learning, which sits at the heart of how medicine is taught in Plymouth; tours of facilities on the main University campus, at the John Bull Building on Tamar Science Park and Derriford Hospital; a chance to see the technology used in the course, including life sciences resources, e-resources, laboratories and clinical skills (which incorporates the opportunity to have a go at a number of medical procedures in a simulated environment).
The event for dentistry also includes an overview, as well as an introduction to enquiry based learning; a visit to the Dental Education Facility at Derriford, one of four in the region where dental students treat NHS patients under supervision; tours to the main University campus (including the state-of-the-art simulation dental learning environment) and facilities on the Tamar Science Park; life sciences and IT facilities.
Included as part of the open day are a number of information fairs held at various locations, offering advice and information on admissions, student funding, widening participation, accommodation and other University faculties with links to Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry such as the Faculty of Health, Education and Society and the Faculty of Biomedicine.
The open days are open to anyone interested in pursuing medicine or dentistry as a career and who would like to study at Plymouth University and places must be booked in advance. Attendance is free of charge and more information, including how to book, is available by logging on at www.plymouth.ac.uk/peninsula.
Professor Robert Sneyd, Dean at Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry, said: “Our open days are a great introduction to studying medicine or dentistry in Plymouth. They are always well-received and invariably our visitors go away enthused and eager to join us. This is borne out by our application figures, which this year have seen 12 applicants for each place in medicine and 10 for each place in dentistry. We look forward to welcoming prospective students and their guests on 1st June.”
