"We're still working on a name" - Kate and William present the baby prince
After much anticipation, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge emerged from St Mary's Hospital with their young son shortly after 7.15pm on Tuesday (23 July).
Hospital staff and members of the public cheered as the couple held the new prince in their arms and spoke briefly to the assembled crowd and international press and media.
But Prince William confirmed that we would have to wait a little longer to know the name of their first child:
"We are still working on a name" he said.
Smiling and looking relaxed the couple spoke to reporters and expressed their delight and emotion at the birth. The duchess said: "It's such a special time. I think any parent will know what this feeling feels like."
Prince William joked: "He's got a good pair of lungs on him, that's for sure. He's a big boy, he's quite heavy."
He added: "It's the first time we have seen him really so we are having a proper chance to catch up."
"I'll remind him of his tardiness when he's a bit older.
"I know how long you've all been standing here so hopefully the hospital and you guys can all go back to normal now and we can go and look after him," the Duke teased.
The baby was delivered at 16:24 BST on 22 July at St Mary's Hospital in Paddington, west London, weighing 8lb 6oz.
The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall visited the new family earlier in the day as did Kate's parents Carole and Michael Middleton.
