City affected by severe weather
Four roads across the city remain closed following heavy rain and strong winds.
Grand Parade, Madeira Road, Radford Road and Pier Street were closed this morning following damage to two walls; one on Madeira Road and other by the Drakes View Hotel. The Wet Wok and Waterfront restaurants have also suffered severe damage and flooding.
Multi-agency response teams have been on site and efforts have been co-ordinated by Police to help address the impact.
Amey engineers along with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service will be conducting a full and thorough review of the Plymouth waterfront infrastructure to establish the extent of any damage. This will include a review of any damage to commercial and residential properties.
Flooding has also affected the following areas:
* Little Dock Lane
* Longbridge Road
* Park Stone Lane
* Preistly Avenue
* Hele Gardens
* Freeman Wharf
* Old Warleigh Road with the JCT of Station Road
* St Levan Road
* Armada Way - outside Holiday Inn.
The agencies will continue to work together to ensure Plymouth is kept as safe as possible and will have tankers on standby to address any further reports of flooding. In addition, sandbags are being delivered to key locations that are at risk.
Chief Inspector Brendan Brookshaw, from Devon and Cornwall Police, said: “We would ask the public to take personal responsibility for their safety and stay prepared. In particular we would urge people not to be tempted to put them or others at risk by heading out to Plymouth waterfront areas to watch the stormy seas as this is exceptionally dangerous in these weather conditions. We would urge the public to abide by the road closures in place on the Hoe.
“We want to reassure the public that their safety is paramount and remains our absolute priority. If anyone is at risk or in danger they should call 999 immediately.
“We are working hard to help any local communities affected return to normality as soon as possible.”
