Get in the running for leadership training
Keen runners are being given the chance to share their passion for the sport and inspire others to put their best feet forward, with funding support from Plymouth City Council.
The Council’s sports development unit is offering financial help for people who want to train as running group leaders and help people get on the road to an active lifestyle.
The ‘Leadership in Running Fitness’ qualification gives you all the skills you need to help get people of all ages and abilities running and the next course in Plymouth is taking place on Saturday 29 March.
Places normally cost £150 but the Council will foot the bill for those who can show they are supportive, enthusiastic, patient and dedicated to helping to get Plymouth moving.
Plymouth boasts a good network of recreational running groups but growing demand means more are needed. Run England groups aim to encourage and develop accessible running for all – men, women, mixed groups, schools, workplaces and families – by working in partnership with local organisations, clubs and communities. The groups provide a safe and enjoyable social environment in which people of any fitness level can participate.
Deputy Council Leader Peter Smith said: “We’ve helped hundreds of people to get fit and active over the last few years with our running groups. Many take part in events like Race for Life and go on to train for a half marathon or join one of the big running clubs in the city. Training as a running group leader means you can help inspire new runners and encourage those who are more experienced to take on new challenges.”
Once fully trained, new leaders will set up and promote their own running groups, with support from the sports development unit.
Places are limited and will fill up fast. For more information call 01752 307008 or email sportsdevelopment@plymouth.gov.uk.
