The Plymouth Youth Concert band is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year and members both past and present are planning to come together for a special concert.

Formed in April 2005, the band was the first city-wide youth ensemble created by the newly-formed Plymouth Youth Music Service and began with just 9 members.

The band has since gone from strength to strength, having played at a number of high profile city events including several Armed Forces Days, the Cultural Olympiad in 2012 and many civic and public events in the city.

On 11 April the band will be performing a very special concert at the Plymouth Guildhall that will feature at least 50 players on stage, all of whom are past and present members.

Many former members have gone on to become professional musicians and composers, including at least five who are in the Royal Marines Band Service, three of them will be returning to play with the band for this special concert.

Fiona Pendreigh, Head of Plymouth Youth Music Service: “This unique concert will be a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the continuity of one of Plymouth’s most popular ensembles. It is also a chance for current players to meet with past players and recognise the potential that a career in music can offer.”

The Plymouth Youth Music Service is part of Plymouth City Council and provides children and young people with a range of musical opportunities from their very first instrumental lesson to membership of one of nine established city-wide ensembles.

As the lead organisation for Plymouth Music Education Hub, the Service organises music groups, tutoring and a growing network of ensembles to enable young people to get involved in all things musical.

Tickets can be purchased from Vibes Music Store in Mayflower Street and the Barbican Tourist Information Centre at a cost of £8.00 for adults and £4.00 for under 16’s. All profits will be going to the charity, Action for Children.
