All Stars to stage Summer Show
Members of The All Stars Theatre Company, which is run for adults with learning difficulties, are staging their annual summer show of singing and dancing on Sunday June 14, to raise awareness of the work the company does for those with learning disabilities.
Every Saturday the Plymouth-based company meets and, under the guidance of founders David and Janet Halifax, adults learn songs and dance routines, socialise and generally have fun, working towards their annual summer performance which members of the public are invited to attend.
The company gained sponsorship from David Richardsons Legal Services of Plymouth after it set up a Disabled Trust for the Halifax’s 35-year-old daughter, Emma.
Mr Richardson explained: “The company does such wonderful work for adults with learning disabilities and I know there is a long list of people wanting to join. If David and Janet had more funding they would set up a second group in a heartbeat. They get paid nothing to run the group but give so much of their time and experience supporting its members, their parents and carers. It is incredibly worthwhile and I have nothing but respect for them and the work they do.”
David Halifax added: “So many times these people have a beginning but never an end - with the summer shows they get to start and finish a project, so it’s a great achievement and they can see what they can actually do.
“The audience love it, they love it, and once they’ve put their show on, they’re absolutely buzzing. It’s a lot of hard work, and teaching them the routines can take a long time, but it’s so enriching for everybody that it’s totally worth it.’
The All Stars desperately need more funding from companies like David Richardsons Legal Services which gives a percentage of its profits to the group. The list of expenses, such as performance and rehearsal venues, costume storage, public liability insurance and so forth, means they need at least £5-6K per year. They buy a lot from charity shops to keep costs as low as possible, but would benefit enormously from the generosity of new benefactors.
The Summer Show takes place at The Muse Theatre (The Co-operative Academy, Bernice Terrace, Lipson, Plymouth, PL4 7PG) at 7pm on Sunday 14 June.
Doors open at 6.30pm. Ticket Prices: £8 Adults, Concessions £6. A fun night is promised for everyone. Tickets are available on 01752 513862 or 07905 863921.
The group is also performing at The Lord Mayor’s Day on 6 June at Armada Way, and at Disability Awareness Day on the Hoe on 20 June, when they will have one performance in the morning and one in the afternoon.
