Jail for 'lunatic' Plymouth biker who posted 153mph ride on YouTube
Police have welcomed the custodial sentence given to a 24-year-old Plymouth man jailed for nine months after filming himself travelling at 153mph on a motorcycle.
Ashley Dixon, from Plymouth, used a helmet camera to record himself on motorcycles travelling through rural roads in Devon and was described by the Judge sentencing him as a ‘lunatic’.
Dixon, who pleaded guilty to two counts of dangerous driving, appeared at Exeter Crown Court on Thursday and was jailed for nine months and banned from driving for two years.
The court was told Dixon took test drives from Plymouth garages and recorded himself speeding on a Honda Fireblade and a BMW S1000R motorcycle in May and June of this year.
MPS Gary Williamson from Devon and Cornwall Police’s Safer Road Support Unit, said: “This sentence gives a clear signal to anyone planning to brag about speeding on Devon and Cornwall’s roads, and that is they will be dealt with the utmost seriousness.
“Ashley Dixon’s irresponsible actions not only put himself at risk, but endangered the lives of many other road users on more than one occasion.
“The speeds he was travelling at meant he would have had no chance to react had anything come into his path on the road or had he encountered anything unexpected on the road surface. A collision at those speeds would have been catastrophic.
“To then post the footage on social media in a bid to gain notoriety for his actions was crass, and quite rightly looked on very dimly by the Judge concerned.”
MPS Williamson added: “Every year we see multiple fatal road traffic collisions in our region where speed is the major contributory factor to someone losing their life.
“It is the responsibility of every road user to drive within the law so our roads are as safe as possible for all concerned.
“I can only hope that other motorists who engage in such arrogant behaviour will see this and realise that if they continue to behave in this manner they are a danger to themselves and others, and when caught they will be dealt with robustly”
