Argyle grab automatic promotion spot (in social media league)
A comprehensive study of every team and all the top name players’ followers highlights massive appeal of global game
Plymouth Argyle have claimed 3rd place in League Two, in the social media version released today.
While on the pitch Argyle are flying high in top spot, their 39,200 followers on Twitter means they are nearly successful in the social media stakes, behind only regional rivals Portsmouth (67,500) and Bristol Rovers (39,300) in the division.
Arsenal have the most followers of any English club on Twitter with 6.46 million, but Manchester United (6.28m) are catching up fast, whilst United captain Wayne Rooney (12.1m) is the most followed player in the Premier League, just ahead of Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil (10m).
Meanwhile, Real Madrid are the most followed club in the Champions League with 17.4m Twitter followers, putting them ahead of their deadly rivals FC Barcelona who have 16.1m followers. Four of the top ten most followed clubs in the elite European competition are English, namely Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea (6.18m) and Manchester City (2.76m).
When it comes to individual players Cristiano Ronaldo is in a league of his own with his 38.5 million followers, whereas Leo Messi is not really on Twitter, with his adidas run account ‘only’ having 1.35 million fans.
