Let it be the place for #Beatlebums!

Let it be... the place music fans take pictures at the spot where the Beatles sat on Plymouth Hoe.

Plymouth officially unveiled its cheeky memorial to the Fab Four with Council leader Tudor Evans and music writer David Quantick the first to sit in the copper casts of four fab backsides.

The image they are recreating was taken by music photographer David Redfern and shows the Beatles with an all-white Smeaton’s Tower in the background. It has become one of the most recognisable pictures of the band.

Now Beatles fans can recreate their own image of this famous picture by sitting on the Hoe on copper bottom moulds made by Thrussell and Thrussell, metalsmiths based on Bodmin Moor.

They were ably assisted by top UK tribute band, ‘The Fab Beatles’ whose bottoms were used to create the moulds. Each member of the band was lowered into a sand pit to create an initial impression. Concrete was then poured in to create the moulds.

These shaped the copper that has been used to create the artwork. The finished piece has a textured design with motifs inspired by the 1960s.

Councillor Leader Tudor Evans said “Plymouth's history is not just about captains and kings and boats ... this is part of our history. I think this is going to be very popular and very good news for Plymouth."

He added he was looking forward to seeing the results on Twitter, with the hashtag #beatlebums.

Writer and music journalist David Quantick who was brought up in Plymouth said: “The Beatles means something different to everyone; falling in love, dancing, doing things you shouldn't do. They changed culture, they changed the world, they changed music. The message is still very simple - in these difficult times, all you need is love.

"What Plymouth has done is brilliant. It has brought a bit of fun, a bit of affection, a bit of art to the Hoe."

Also present at the event was Jean Lightfoot, whose parents were on the bench behind the Beatles when the picture was taken in 1967.

To celebrate the unveiling a special concert by ‘The Fab Beatles’ will take place at the Athenaeum on Friday 27 November from 8pm. Tickets are just £5 per person and can be bought from www.fabbeatlesplym.eventbrite.co.uk.

‘The Fab Beatles’ will recreate a set list from one of the two concerts the Beatles performed at the ABC in 1963 and 1964.
