Devonshire Freemasons help with the cost of cancer

Macmillan Cancer Support’s Financial Grant Scheme has recently been boosted by a donation of £5,000 from the Devonshire Freemasons.

The donation was made after the Freemason’s learned of the financial struggle people are facing when diagnosed with cancer.

Area Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, Suzie Warren said ‘We are so grateful for the support we have received from the Devonshire Freemasons. This donation will have a direct impact on people in Devon struggling with the cost of cancer.’

Suzie went on to say ‘When people are diagnosed with cancer, they worry about how they are going to cope financially and tell us that on average they are £570 worse off each month. This is because many people have to stop work during treatment and there are also additional costs like travelling to hospital or the need to buy household aids. Macmillan Cancer Support provides means-tested grants to help people in immediate need who are going through cancer treatment or still seriously affected by their illness. In 2015 over £29,000 was distributed to individuals affected by cancer and in urgent need in Plymouth to help with these additional costs and provide some relief from the additional worry.’

The Provincial Grand Master, Rt. Worshipful Brother Ian Kingsbury JP, presented Suzie Warren and the Macmillan team a cheque for £5,000 when they met at the Mustard Tree Macmillan Centre in Plymouth’s Derriford Hospital.

Ian Kingsbury said “the incredible work carried out by Macmillan Cancer Support must continue long into the future, this can only be done with the dedication and care that has always been a trademark of this fabulous organisation and as Freemasons we are proud to be able in some small way be a part of that future”
