The number of young people applying for a secondary school place has increased this year and thousands of primary pupils in Plymouth will today find out which school they will be going to this September.

The Council have confirmed that 92.87 per cent of young people received their first preference of school, 5.09 per cent their second and 1.24 per cent their third. Less than one per cent did not receive any of the schools they listed as a preference.

Letters and emails confirming school places for September 2017 were sent to parents today. Schools have also been given the admissions information relating to their children so parents are also able to ask teachers directly for confirmation of their child’s secondary school place.

2,984 young people submitted applications for a secondary school this year. That compares with 2,930 last year, when the Council was able to match 93.16 per cent with their first preference of secondary school.

Councillor Terri Beer, Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Public Health for Plymouth City Council, said: “We’re extremely pleased that we have been able to match the overwhelming majority of young people with their first preference of secondary school. We understand how emotive the decision of secondary schooling is for parents and our school admissions team aims to match as many parents requests as they possibly can. If you are unhappy about the school place your child has been allocated please call the council’s school admissions team on 01752 307469.”

Any parent who wants their child to be considered for a grammar school place in September 2018 will need to register for the 11+ examination between 24 April 2017 and 1 September 2017.

Full details are available on the Council’s website at web.plymouth.gov.uk/schooladmissions.htm or by calling the Council’s school admissions team on 01752 307469.
