Dementia work sees city centre cafe in running for three major awards

MEMORIES matter at a Plymouth-based cafe that is in the running to win three major awards for its work to support people living with memory loss.

Moments Cafe, on New George Street, is open to everyone in the community but has a particular emphasis on helping those with dementia and their families, featuring 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s zones to spark conversations, encourage reminiscing and provide a comfortable space where people can access information without stigma.

Memory Matters South West, which provides dementia assistance and training for individuals, carers and professionals in communities throughout Cornwall and Devon, opened the cafe in March this year following a successful Crowdfunding campaign that raised more than £16,000.

Director Laura Walker said: “We are over the moon to be finalists in the Herald City and Waterfront Best Customer Service Award, the National Dementia Care Awards Outstanding Dementia Care Innovation category and the Alzheimer’s Society’s National Dementia Friendly Awards Dementia Partnership of the Year category.

“It is fabulous to have the work of our team and volunteers recognised as it is through their sheer dedication that we are able to provide our services.”

Since the cafe opened 661 people have used services and/or taken part in events; 21,500 customers’ purchases have been ploughed back into the project; 445 customers have supported the 'pay it forward' scheme and bought meals and coffees for the homeless of Plymouth; and 13 new volunteers are involved in various projects supporting those with dementia.

Regular visitor to the cafe Dorothy Tudor said: “This is a great all round organisation and is one-of-a-kind.

“Raising awareness of dementia and dispersing the stigma that surrounds it is hugely appreciated by those affected - long may it continue and grow.”

All proceeds from the cafe are reinvested in support groups and respite for people living with dementia and their families in the South West.

More than £96,000 was also invested by Plymouth Social Enterprise Investment Fund along with a £32,000 grant to build the café and hub.
