Medics4Ukraine convoy 17 will go ahead despite dam breach
Independent British initiative Medics4Ukraine (M4U) is going ahead with its next convoy despite the destruction of the dam and subsequent flooding in Kherson.
Co-founder Mark Hannaford said: “The blatant environmental terrorism that’s taken place has prompted questions about a potential impact on Medics4Ukraine’s long-standing support for Kherson City and the wider region.
“With a training mission and our seventeenth major supply convoy about to depart, we are watching the unfolding situation carefully. However, I can confirm our ongoing support and intention for an expanded mission as a result of the changed circumstances.”
The event has caused significant damage to homes, infrastructure, and livelihoods. The aftermath of such disasters can be devastating, leaving people struggling to cope with the immediate and long-term effects of the disaster.
Mark, who is also the founder of Devon-based World Extreme Medicine, says “In response, M4U will continue supporting and training the people of Kherson to help them recover and rebuild their lives. In fact, by training local people in disaster response and first aid, we are helping to build the community’s ability to prepare for and respond to future emergencies.”
M4U is working with local partners in Kherson to provide ongoing medical assistance, with the significant damage to homes and infrastructure leaving many needing medical attention.
Co-founder Luca Alfatti added: “We are liaising with local healthcare providers to offer medical aid to those affected by the disaster, which includes medical supplies, equipment, and personnel to help treat those injured or suffering from illnesses related to the flooding.
“We are also assisting with the provision of shelter, food, and other essential items to help people recover.”
To date, M4U has delivered almost £2,205,000 in trauma supplies and has provided on-the-ground training to Civil Defence units, firefighters, doctors, nurses, paramedics, Special Forces and border guard units.
The initiative continues to be viable because of its many supporters, who include Herminius, Festival Medical Services, Reflex Medical, Celox Medical and innumerable volunteers and donors.
