Flaming Barrel strikes Gold!

Ottery St Mary’s popular food and drink business Coldharbour Farm has received yet another gong, this time for its ‘Flaming Barrel’ gin.

The judges at the Food Drink Devon Awards deemed Flaming Barrel worthy of a gold award.

The gin was successfully launched in October 2021 at the Ottery Food & Families Festival and has since continued to be popular with customers of the Farm Shop and, more recently, the Field Kitchen.

The gin is distilled by Exmoor Distillery using a bespoke blend that includes hints of kaffir lime leaves, pink peppercorns, liquorice and more. The judges commented that the peppercorn gave a distinctive aroma, noting the smooth soft flavours of orange, aniseed and star anise offered a ‘pleasant flavoursome taste’.

Andrea Broadhurst, who came up with the idea for the gin together with co-owner Beth Ashfield, said: “For those who haven’t yet heard of our fabulous gin, it was inspired by the tradition of barrel rolling, and the label is based on a photo of my dad Roger, who was a barrel roller himself.

“Flaming Barrel means a lot to us, it’s a huge part of our recent journey. This is a gin that reflects the history and passion of our town, and we are delighted with the gold award!”
