Theatre Royal Plymouth celebrates Pride in Plymouth with Pride Pop-Up and Cabaret

Theatre Royal Plymouth (TRP) is hosting an array of events next week (8-10 Feb) as part of Pride in Plymouth’s celebrations for LGBTQIA+ History Month. Events include a Pride Pop-Up archive showcasing artifacts and documents that observe LGBTQIA+ history across the region as well as a cabaret evening featuring spoken word performances and live music.

The Pride Pop-Up: Archives - Thurs 8 Feb, 11am - 3pm, The Gallery Café – is non-ticketed and free to access for all and delves into the South West’s LGBTQIA+ history. Participants are invited to explore the archival materials, as well as share their own experiences to add to the growing records.

In Conversation: The Importance and Power of Community Archives- Thurs 8 Feb, 7:15pm (2 hours approx.) - Join Dr Alan Butler and Donna Maughan (MA) for a presentation and discussion around the power of community archives that will spark intergenerational conversations and reflections.

Queer Voices Platform - Fri 9 Feb, 7:15pm (2 hours approx.) – TRP will play host to an evening of LGBTQIA+ joy offering a platform for local performers to present passionate monologues and short pieces of work.

Crème de la Crème Cabaret - Sat 10 Feb, 7:15pm (2 hours approx.) – TRP will present a grandiose evening filled with Queer theatre, spoken word, comedy and live music.

Pride in Plymouth Director Alan Butler collated the archives that will be displayed at the theatre. Alan said: “I used to be an usher at Theatre Royal Plymouth so there is a definite sense of coming home.

“The city has been quiet about its LGBTQ+ past, but everything Pride in Plymouth does is about hearing voices, sharing stories and capturing these for generations to come. For a long time, society made people feel ashamed of who they were and not to talk about it, and we lost a lot of history we’ll never get back, so it’s important to capture what’s happening now and celebrate it.

“LGBTQIA+ History Month is for all and is a great reminder that everyone’s stories matter and that they have a place in society. Our new project, Pride 365, takes it to the next level and stresses how important it is to be proud of who you are and who you love every day of the year.”

All performances take place in The Drum auditorium and are pay what you feel with a minimum donation of £5.00.
