Family law firm demonstrates support for Armed Forces
The Family Law Company has just signed the Armed Forces Covenant, joining nearly 12,000 businesses across the UK who have already made their pledges. Fittingly, the official signing took place in Plymouth during Armed Forces Week.
The Covenant is a promise from the nation, ensuring that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, are treated fairly. Introduced in 2000 as an informal agreement, it became enshrined in law in December 2021 as a promise by the nation that those from the Armed Forces should be treated fairly and not be disadvantaged when accessing public and commercial services.
Making this commitment is especially relevant to The Family Law Company which supports many Armed Forces clients and their partners through family law matters, including divorce, unmarried finance and challenging situations involving children, both through privately funded and legally aided services.
Director Jonathan Madge from the firm’s Plymouth office, said: “While in general military and civilian cases have the same legal proceedings, there are elements that can make a military divorce more complicated, which is where our expertise comes in.
“In addition, we recognise the importance of adapting our services to clients who don’t work in conventional ‘9 to 5’ roles. Many military personnel move around in their work, here or overseas, and are not always easily contactable. So it’s important to provide a flexible service that keeps everything on track whilst not causing undue pressure.”
As an acknowledgement of its commitment to the Armed Forces, The Family Law Company has also been awarded a Bronze award within the Covenant’s Employer Recognition Scheme.
The South West has a long association with Armed Forces, with almost 37,000 personnel currently based in the region. Plymouth in particular has a strong connection, marking Armed Forces Day annually in June, with military bands, displays, tournaments and more taking place on Plymouth Hoe.
