Welsh National Opera (WNO) - The Cunning Little Vixen
David Pountney’s critically acclaimed new production of Lulu will open WNO’s spring season at the Theatre Royal this April. WNO will also be performing revivals of David Pountney’s The Cunning Little Vixen and Joachim Herz’s classic Madam Butterfly.
Lulu and The Cunning Little Vixen are part of the first of WNO’s themed seasons which aim to link the operas that WNO perform. ‘Free Spirits’ is the theme for Spring 2013 as both characters are seen to be pushing the boundaries of society.
Lulu describes the trajectory of a bright female star – a giddy ascent follwed by a terrible decline. This is Berg’s second and final opera and is a masterpiece of total theatre.
Janáček’s The Cunning Little Vixen is a wonderous hymn to the cycle of life and nature’s renewal, and is a truly uplifting experience. This magical production receives its first performance by WNO for over a decade.
Puccini’s Madam Butterfly is tragic Italian opera at its most affecting. From the rapturous love-duet to the devastating One Fine Day, Puccini employs every note to immerse his audience in Cio-Cio-San’s tragic story.
