Pilgrims beat high flying Robins to climb towards safety

Plymouth Argyle 2 Cheltenham Town 0

League Two, Saturday 6th April 2013

Argyle put behind them their Easter Monday defeat at York and rekindled their excellent recent form - four wins in five games - with victory over promotion chasing Cheltenham at Home Park.

With half time approaching, Reuben Reid scored his first home goal for the club bundling the ball into the net after Joe Bryan's shot had rebounded from the post.  The second came courtesy of an own goal from the unfortunate Robins defender Michael Hector after 54 minutes.

Despite the occasional flurry from Cheltenham keen to pick up points in their chase for automatic promotion, Plymouth defended staunchly and enjoyed plenty of attacking play themselves, though they could not find a third to put the game to bed.

The result lifts the Pilgrims up to 18th in League Two with a game in hand over most of their rivals near the bottom of the table. It remains tight with John Sheridan's side only three points clear of the relegation places, but their form and recent success against promotion-chasing clubs ought to give them plenty of confidence for the remaining four games of the season. Surely safety is now in sight.

Next up, another tricky away game against promotion contenders, Burton Albion next Saturday.
