Shanahan appointed as Plymouth Albion head coach

Plymouth Albion have announced James Shanahan, a former player at the club, as their new Head Coach.

The 36 year old replaces Nat Saumi whose contract is not being renewed. Saumi is returning to his native Fiji after a 10 year association with the club.

Shanahan joins the club from Old Albanian RFC where is he is Director of Rugby and Cambridge University RFC, where he is Head Coach. Shanahan who played for Plymouth Albion in 2002-2003, is currently Director of Rugby at National 1 club Old Albanian RFC as well as being Head Coach of Cambridge University RFC.

The former centre has signed a two year contract with the option of extending to a third year.

The Albion Chairman, Dr Graham Stirling said: "We had a very competitive field of applicants and James ticked all the relevant boxes. James is a very ambitious and enthusiastic coach and we are delighted he is joining us.”

Shanahan said, “I’m really excited to be joining Plymouth Albion. It is going to be a big challenge, but I can’t wait to be coaching one of the top 24 clubs in England.

“Plymouth and Devon rugby wise has huge potential and I want Plymouth Albion to attract and develop the best young players in the area.”

Shanahan knows the West Country well having had playing spells with both Exeter Chiefs and the Cornish Pirates.
