Environment Agency issues flood alerts as heavy rainfall hits the region
UPDATE: 4.30pm Tuesday 14 May
The Environment Agency has issued a number of flood alerts for Cornwall and West Devon, including the Plymouth area, as the heavy rain continues across the region this afternon and into the early hours of tomorrow morning (Wednesday 15 May).
Between 20 and 40mm of rain is expected and higher localised rainfall could cause some river flooding risks. Twelve flood alerts have been raised for the region including in the following areas in West Devon and South East Cornwall:
- The River Plym and Tory Brook including Plympton, Coypool, Newnham Park, Marsh Mills, Clearbrook and Meavy
- The River Yealm including Lee Mill, Yealmpton, Popples Bridge and Newton Ferrers
- Lower River Tamar including Gunnislake, Calstock, Cargreen, Bere Alston, Morwellham and Cotehele
- The River Lynah including Rame Peninsula, Callington, Saltash, Rilla Mill, Pillaton and Landrake
- Rivers Tavy and Walkham including Tavistock, Walkhampton, Bedford Bridge, Horrabridge and Lopwell
The Met Office warns of potentially tricky driving conditions with surface water and spray from the roads.
It will be cold too, with strong winds, potentially reaching gale force in some places and possible wet snowfall on Dartmoor.
The rain is expected to clear tomorrow morning (Wednesday) bringing sunnier spells throughout the day but more showers are forecast for later in the week.
