Duke of Edinburgh spends his 92nd birthday in hospital

The Duke of Edinburgh who is 92 today, is recovering after an exploratory operation at the London Clinic over the weekend.

The Duke has been honoured with gun salutes at the Tower of London, Edinburgh Castle and Green Park in London, marking his birthday.

Prince Philip underwent what Buckingham Palace has described as a pre-arranged "exploratory operation following abdominal investigations", performed under general anaesthetic.

The Prince, who is the oldest ever male member of the British royal family, was born in Corfu in 1921. He married the then Princess Elizabeth in 1947 and was given the title the Duke of Edinburgh by King George VI, becoming a Prince of the United Kingdom on his wife's accession to the throne.

The Duke of Edinburgh is expected to remain in hospital for about two weeks. The Palace said "further updates will continue to be issued when appropriate."
