More gold for Ruta as Plymouth's swimming star breaks third world record

Plymouth-based swimming sensation Ruta Meilutyte has added more goal medals to her Olympic and World Championship titles in a World Cup event in Moscow.

The Lithuanian who is a national hero in her home country and studies at Plymouth College, won both 50m and 100m short course breaststroke titles.

The 16-year-old coached by Jon Rudd at Plymouth Leander, set a new world record in the 100m on Saturday (12 October) beating her rival Yulia Efimova, and narrowly missed out on beating the 50m fastest time, finishing just nine hundredths of a second outside American Jessica Hardy's four-year-old mark.

The record can be added to the world best times she holds for the 50m and 100m breaststroke long course records set at the World Championships in Barcelona in July.

Ruta also won the 100m individual medley ahead of Hungary's Katinka Hosszu.
