100mph storm winds to hit UK on Christmas Day

Forecasters have issued a double warning over two large storm depressions heading towards the UK, the second of which is expected to mean a stormy Christmas for the whole country.

The first depression known as Storm Emily is expected to arrive in Scotland and Northern Ireland late tomorrow night and with winds expected to hit between 80 an 100mph, leading the Met Office to issue a severe weather warning.

The storm is expected to worsen on Thursday but the Met Office has said that persistent rain will quickly clear to be replaced with frequent wintry showers.

As Storm Emily passes long-range forecasts predict could see storm weather affect much of the UK around Christmas day.

Gavin Conway of the Weather channel predicts that: “The next stormy period looks likely to be Christmas Eve to Christmas Day with a very deep low pressure system moving further south.

“Worst case will be severe gales across the southern half of the UK on Christmas Day and storm force winds around coasts in the south west and Channel.”

The storm front marks the end of a unseasonably mild period which has lead to an early flowering of fruits like apple which have been ‘tricked’ by the relatively high temperature.
