Brahms took 21 years to compose his first symphony. The conductor for the premiere, Hans von Bülow, referred to it as 'Beethoven's 10th' - but it's more of a homage than plagiarism. From the opening bar this work is impressive and magnificent – and yes the finale does sound much like that of Beethoven’s Ode to Joy.
This event is free, with donations to Plymouth University Brain Tumour Research Centre of Excellence gratefully received.
