César Franck: Symphony in D minor
Orchestra players are invited to play and explore this 19th-century masterpiece and the only symphony composed by César Franck. The Belgian composer, best known as an organist and teacher, created this wonderfully colourful, romantic work in 1888 and it received its premiere at the Paris Conservatoire the following year.
Kullervo is Sibelius’ first major work. It is a five-movement symphonic poem for orchestra, soloists and male voice choir. It was heard five times from its inception in 1892 until 1893 before the composer inextricably withdrew it. Since the composer’s death in 1957 the world has started to hear performances and it is now recognised as being a stunning if unconventional contribution to the orchestral repertoire. We are going to study four of the movements in this Workshop Day – omitting the third.

War with France put a damper on artistic life in Vienna in the summer of 1806, but winter brought a revival and the first large-scale orchestral concert was given by the violinist Franz Clement, leader of the Vienna Opera Orchestra. Beethoven wrote his violin concerto for this event. Today, it is praised as a masterpiece of tenderness and serenity.
Mike Westbrook, “Britain’s most innovative big band leader” (The Wire) presents his Jazz Rock Oratorio with his current 22-piece ensemble. Vocalists Kate Westbrook, Martine Waltier and Billy Bottle head an impressive assembly of jazz, classical, pop and rock musicians.

A renaissance in English music emerged toward the end of the 19th century. The new musical style identified with folk song and Elizabethan dances that revitalized the genre of the chamber orchestra. This is a selection from our best-loved British composers and includes Jonathan Pitkin’s Whispering, clamoring commissioned by Ten Tors Orchestra in 2005.

The University of Plymouth Orchestra presents a concert in the city's main church with a selection of music for full orchestra and also for the string, woodwind and brass sections individually.
The orchestra comprises of students, staff and community members and performs three concerts during the academic year.

Plymouth University Orchestra performs a programme of popular, classical music for orchestra and smaller wind, string and brass ensembles.
