‘An Opportunity for the Exercise of the National Fancy’: the Post Office and the Irish Revolution

Dr Claire Fitzpatrick, Plymouth University

Claire Fitzpatrick completed her doctoral studies at Cambridge University, and is now a lecturer in modern Irish history at Plymouth University. Her research interests lie mainly in the development of democracy in the Irish free state and the role of Labour in the Irish revolution. She is also interested in popular participation in the revolution, and the effects of partition on politics and identity and the development of the state in Northern Ireland in relation to Labour and popular politics. She is currently working on a history of the Irish post office in the period of 1912-27, which is the topic of this evening’s lecture.
