Crash (1997)
J.G. Ballard Series
Running time: 97 minutes, certificate: 18 US/Canada, language: English
Dir: David Cronenberg
Cast: James Spader, Holly Hunter, Elias Koteas, Deborah Kara Unger.
David Cronenberg’s controversial Crash is adapted from his 1973 novel. After surviving a brutal car wreck, commercial director James Ballard (Spader) finds himself slowly drawn to a mysterious subculture of people who have transformed automobile accidents into erotic events. James' descent into this fetishistic underworld is approached with cold, scientific detachment. The film is a perfect marriage between subject and director; Cronenberg, the most well-known originator of body horror films which explore how our psychology is inextricably linked to our physiology creates the perfect lens through which Ballard’s exploration of how we become enslaved by our impulses to the point where they may kill us can be viewed.
