Film: Une Nouvelle Amie (2014) The New Girlfriend

In acclaimed writer-director Francois Ozon’s provocative French-language film, Claire discovers a secret about the husband of her late best friend, Laura. Following Laura’s death, Claire reaches out to comfort bereaved David (Romain Duris), only to discover his secret: he enjoys dressing as a woman. With dashes of George Cukor and Douglas Sirk, Ozon elevates his exploration of femininity to a new level.

University of Plymouth clinical psychologist Dr Jacqui Steadmon and a representative from a local charity will discuss current mental health problems in young people who identify as LGBT+, and highlight the film’s portrayal of gender and sexual orientation issues.

Dr. Alastair Smith, Associate Professor in Psychology at the University of Plymouth, will introduce this event, which is part of the Celluloid Psychology series.
