Seth Lakeman
Westcountry folk singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Seth Lakeman is playing a hometown show with his band at Plymouth Pavilions on Saturday 19 December.
Seth has successfully steered English folk into the mainstream with high-energy performances and a series of best-selling albums including his current album Word of Mouth which entered the charts at No.20 on release last year to rave reviews ‘his finest in years’ (Evening Standard).
Word Of Mouth is a defining album for Seth Lakeman and features the stories of the real local West Country people who inspired the album. His previous albums include Mercury-nominated ‘Kitty Jay’ and the gold-selling ‘Freedom Fields’ (2006) which features the song, ’King & Country’ which he performed on Armistice Day this year in Trafalgar Square as part of the British Legion’s Silence in the Square event. In between touring this year Seth has been writing new material and will head into to the studio early next year to record a new album.
Support on the evening comes from Irish folk singer and Seth’s sister in law Cara Dillon. Possessing a rare and unique voice that has been lauded since her very beginnings winning the All Ireland singing trophy aged only 14. Together with her husband and musical partner, Sam Lakeman, she has earned both commercial success and astonishing critical acclaim.
Recent years have seen her return wholeheartedly to her Irish roots creating fresh interpretations of traditional standards with stunning results. Her reach is truly global with fans to be found all over the world with her clear, Northern Irish voice even seducing giants such as Disney who, in 2010, asked her to sing the title song to the animated movie “Tinkerbell and the Great Fairy Rescue”.
She’s won countless awards and accolades including “Album Of The Year” at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, The Meteor Music Award for “Best Irish Female”, and Tatler’s “Woman Of The Year in Music” and has appeared in prestigious concert halls and at festivals the world over.
Always looking to introduce her voice and music to new listeners, Cara’s topped the charts with dance remixes, guest appearances and, more recently, presented her songs with full orchestral backing bringing her music to an entirely new audience.
Also supporting on the night are indie/americana trio Wildwood Kin from Exeter in Devon who are sisters Beth and Emillie Key and their cousin Meghann Loney. The music is a mix of their own beautiful and thought provoking original songs with a few stunning arrangements of some better known covers.
Their voices meld perfectly in effortless and sublime close harmony and they accompany themselves on a range of acoustic instruments. Although they have only been performing together for less than 18 months the girls have already been shortlisted for a major BBC Radio 4 Music Award and this Summer they headlined the BBC Introducing stage at Somersault festival and they played the main stages of numerous festivals including Beautiful Days in Devon where they were joined on stage by Seth Lakeman.
