Behind the scenes and below the stairs at Saltram

Families visiting National Trust’s Saltram, near Plymouth, will have the chance to experience life below the stairs over the coming weeks.

On the three weekends of 16/17 and 23/24 February, and 2/3 March, between 11am and 4 pm, the domestic areas of the Palladian mansion will be brought to life by the hustle and bustle of a whole host of ‘servants’ busily packing up the Parker family’s treasures for their long journey to London.

‘The Parkers on the Move’ takes families on an exclusive look at domestic areas rarely open to the public. Meeting all the servants, from the Steward to the House Keeper, they will gain real insight into a life in service.

Families groups can join a special half-hour tour where they will not only meet the servants, but also find out all about the jobs they do by helping them with their chores. What’s more, there will be the chance to try on a range of items from our beautiful Georgian and Regency costume collection – from frocks to tailcoats, there is something for all the family – the perfect photo opportunity!

‘The Parkers on the Move’ tours take place every half an hour from 11am until 3.30pm. Entry is free for National Trust members, and for non-members when purchasing a garden ticket (£5.50 adult, £3 child, under fives go free).  Please note, only the domestic areas of the house will be open and entry is only via family tours; the whole house re-opens for the season on 9 March.
