Lidl of the future opens in Plympton
Lidl UK has confirmed that its new store on Plymouth Road in Plympton will open its doors for the first time to customers at 8am on 24th November, with Cllr Patrick Nicholson and Cllr Terri Beer in attendance to cut the ribbon to the brand new supermarket.
In addition to the ribbon cutting, Lidl will be offering customers the chance to sample some of its award-winning products throughout the day. For the first week of trading customers will be able to enjoy 50% of selected fruit & vegetables including British Cauliflower (39p each, normal price 79p), Fresh Vine Tomatoes (99p per kg, normal price £1.99) and Avocadoes (47p each, normal price 95p). There will also be up to £30 selected non-food products while stocks last including a Silvercrest Blender (£12.99, save £7), a Livarno Sideboard (£24.99, save £15), a Parkside 14.4V 4-in-1 Cordless Multi-Tool (£39.99, save £20) and a Singer Sewing Machine (£49.99, save £30).
The new supermarket forms part of the company’s ongoing expansion and regeneration plans in the UK which will see its existing store portfolio 640 stores increase to up to 1,500. The sustainable 1,690m² store has created 40 new jobs and boasts state-of-the-art facilities including an in-store bakery, longer-style tills with dual packing facilities, self-service checkouts, customer toilets, baby changing facilities and ample parking for both cars and bicycles.
The fully glass fronted façade maximises natural daylight entering the building, whilst sensor controlled exterior sun blinds automatically operate to mitigate the effects of unwanted heat from solar gain. The electrical lighting system is made up entirely of LED fittings which, compared with a traditional lighting system, are over 50% more energy efficient whilst still providing excellent levels of lighting to meet the needs of customers choosing their products.
Lidl UK’s Regional Head of Property, James Mitchell, commented: “We would like to thank all those who have played a part in bringing this new Lidl store to Plympton. It is wonderful for us to be able to create more jobs and investment opportunities in the area, and we can’t wait to start serving our multi-award winning products to the local community.”
Lidl, which was crowned ‘Best Supermarket 2016’ by readers of Good Housekeeping, has experienced continued growth over the years, as consumers flock to the shop to discover products – two thirds of which are British - ranging from quality British fruit and vegetables, to premiums wines from its much coveted Wine Cellar collections. Over 5.5million British shoppers are now flocking to Lidl each week, half a million more a week than in 2014. Lidl’s success continues as the latest Kantar Worldpanel results outline its sales growth of 8.4% and market share high of 4.6%.
