Olympic Way and Jubilee Road opened up to help keep city moving

Restrictions have been lifted on two roads in Derriford and West Park to help keep traffic flowing and reduce congestion.

Olympic Way, which runs between Tavistock Road and Plymbridge Road, was previously a bus lane but has now been opened to all vehicles.

The bus lane was installed as part of the development of the George Park and Ride site but buses have not needed to use it as originally anticipated.

By opening it up as a normal road we have enabled traffic heading south on the A386 to turn left at the George Junction and access Estover without needing to go around the site and via the traffic signals.

We have also removed a traffic island from Jubilee Road in West Park to help reduce pressure on the busy Crownhill Road.

The island was installed to help prevent ‘rat running’ through Jubilee Road but this often resulted in congestion and queuing at the nearby junction of Crownhill Road and Budshead Road and a number of requests were made by local residents and ward councillors for it to be removed.

Councillor Steve Ricketts, Cabinet Member for Transport and Housing Delivery, said: “One of our priorities is to keep Plymouth moving as it grows and this includes removing blockages on our road network where we can, while also ensuring the safety of all road users.

“These improvements should make a big difference to motorists and journey times but we will, of course, continue to monitor traffic flow and safety at both locations.”
