There’s more to coastal resorts in the UK than sticks of rock and sandcastles; they can make excellent locations for businesses. While it stands to reason that there is an abundance of fish and chip shops and stores selling buckets and spades in these locations, it is also becoming increasingly apparent that they are proving a draw for businesses across a range of industries.

Are you one of the businesses planning on relocating? Whether you’ve been thinking of setting up a satellite office in Scarborough or you’re thinking of basing your enterprise near to the bright lights of Blackpool, here are some reasons why this could be a great move for your business.

Clean sea air

One of the main plus points of relocating to the coast is the impact on the overall wellbeing of staff. According to Mind, the mental health charity, more than 21% of employees have called in sick due to workplace-related stress.

Add to this the findings of a recent study that revealed that those living close to the sea are less likely to suffer from anxiety and depression, and it’s clear that it could be beneficial for your team to base them closer to the coast. By placing the focus on the wellbeing of your staff, you could find that you see an uptick in production and engagement, and retain more employees, too.

Affordable business

Another plus point is that by moving out of busy cities, you’re more likely to get more for your money. There are several ways to find the funding to relocate your company, with options such as secured business loans providing key cashflow for your new investment. However, making the move from renting office space in London to the south west coast, for example, is generally a cost-effective switch.

In addition, the cheaper rent for properties outside of the major cities can also prove to be a draw for potential employees. This means that you could create an attractive job prospect, attracting fresh talent in an untapped location.

Well connected

It’s easier than ever to do business from a coastal hub, thanks to improved transport links in the last decade. Road and rail connections in particular have been enhanced, with trains running directly from the south coast into London, making it easier than ever for business people to make their meeting in the capital and be back in time for an appointment at their seaside HQ.

A change in fortune

The government also sees the potential in tapping into all that the coast has to offer businesses in the UK. The Coastal Communities Fund is an initiative that has seen seaside areas win funding that is designed to balance the economy and invest in its future. With the government also seeing what the coast can offer, it makes sense that SMEs in particular are likely to grow in these locations.

So, will you make the leap and move your business away from the city to the seaside?
