The South West is home to several different industries in the UK, some of which you’ve probably never heard of. Despite this, these industries continue to thrive under the radar, going from strength to strength and continuing to grow at a rapid rate.
These industries can vary and can be anything from IT solutions to craftspeople. It’s such a dynamic group of different industries all coming together to show the rest of the UK how to do it and what the South West is all about.

With these two places known for their creative and expressive residents, several different projects have made these places home and used the people around them to become thriving businesses in the industry.
Bristol has become quite well known for its use of Virtual Reality, with there being a number of different event-based businesses based there where you can go either on your own or in groups to take part in VR-based games.
These range from puzzle challenges where you’re all in a room with VR headsets and need to escape, to military-style modes where you’re a soldier and you have to try and survive. These rooms are often used by other businesses for team building, but can be great for just casual social events such as birthdays and parties.
These businesses are thriving as previously there was nothing like them, so offering something completely new and fresh is bound to get new people through the doors. With the rise of VR popularity, these have come at the perfect time and are making the most of the VR boom whilst it’s around.
Marine science
The South West is also known for its extensive coastline, with several places offering stunning fishing villages and coastlines, it’s no surprise to see some form of Marine science based here.
With such access to the oceanfront via these towns and villages, scientists and biologists have great and easy access to the ocean, allowing them to conduct their relevant research in order to better understand the ocean around us.
Along with this, it’s also used to research renewable energy, with places like Plymouth being a hub for these developments. For example, they’re currently looking at using these docks to test the possibilities of using offshore energy, such as tidal and wave power, which could completely change how we both collect and store energy around the country.
Gaming and Gambling Industry
For these industries, people often look to the likes of London and the main cities as the hubs; however, the South West has been quietly building up to becoming a leading powerhouse in the UK’s gambling industry. With the rapid rise and growth, it’s no surprise that new casinos launch every month, as said by William Macmaster of Casino.org.
With prices constantly on the rise, companies have looked for alternative places to base their businesses, with the likes of London pricing many companies out, so the South West is becoming a hot spot for land-based casinos, as well as online providers.

As many companies have evidenced, as long as you’re delivering on your company's values and performance goals, there’s no reason why the South West can’t be your company's home. When you think of leading sectors around the UK, most of the time you’d think the biggest ones are based in the likes of London, Manchester, or Birmingham.
